Individual Program Plans (IPP)

An IPP is a working document for the student, teachers, parents and other personnel involved in the individual student’s educational programming. It is designed to help address children’s special education needs. Goals and objectives are created based on diagnostic information and recommendations made by various professionals and consultants. These goals and objectives provide the basis for intervention strategies.

 

School staff and parents both play important roles in making the IPP successful. Your child’s teacher will review the IPP with you at the beginning of the school year and updates on goal progress will be sent home with the report cards. Parent-teacher interviews are also a great time to discuss your child’s IPP success.

 

Assessments

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s speech, language, or academics please contact your child’s teacher or the Special Education Coordinator. If needed, several assessment possibilities are available incuding:

 

-Acadmic Assessment (Psychologist)

-Speech & Language Assessment (SLP)

-OT Assessment (Gross and fine motor skills, sensory concerns, accommodations, etc).

Resource: Literacy

At Ermineskin Elementary School we are fortunate to have two Resource rooms. One of the Resource rooms is targeted to help students in grades 1 to 3 and the other in grades 4 to 6.

What is the Resource Room?

The Resource room is a language rich environment where students are exposed to many types of literacy activities in a small group setting. There are typically five students with one teacher and most students spend one period each day with the resource room teacher working on their reading and writing skills.
Most students attend resource for half of the school year, although some students benefit from remaining in resource for the entire school year. The classroom and the resource room teacher work together when selecting students that would benefit from the program.

Areas of focus in the Resource room include:

  • Letter Recognition
  • Decoding Skills
  • High frequency sight words
  • Making Words
  • Word Families and Rhyming
  • Reading strategies
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Guided Reading
  • Writing Conventions
  • Writing detailed sentences and paragraphs

Speech and Language

At Ermineskin Elementary School we have several programs that help students improve their speech and language skills. If you have any concerns about your child’s speech or language skills, ask your child’s teacher to give you more information on how to refer him or her for a speech and language evaluation.

Language Learning

The Language Learning Room is an Early Intervention Program that focuses on improving receptive and expressive language skills for students in grade 1 and 2. Students work with the Language Assistant individually or in small groups for one block every day.
Areas of focus in Language Learning include:
• Vocabulary
• Sentence structure
• The way a child understands language
• Listening skills
• Concept work (qualitative, quantitative, positional

TinyEYE Online Speech Services

TinyEYE Therapy Services provides Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) to school districts using a delivery model known as Telepractice. Ermineskin Elementary connects our students with SLPs using web cameras, headsets, high-speed internet, and TinyEYE online speech therapy software.
This is the first year that Ermineskin Elementary School is using these services. The majority of the students currently in this program are in grades 2 to 6 and working on articulation skills.
Students in this program work with the Language assistant for two or three 20-minute sessions per week. An SLP observes a minimum of every fifth session via the internet to work collaboratively with the Language Assistant to improve and correct their speech sounds.
